Why Alignment in Yoga Matters More Than Your Teacher May Know

I have been teaching yoga for 15 years and certifying teachers for 9. In that time I have watched a quiet crisis develop in yoga classrooms across the country, one that is directly connected to the pain many students are bringing to their practice and taking home with them.
The crisis is not a lack of passionate teachers. There are plenty of those. It is a lack of biomechanical knowledge and an increasingly popular idea that alignment does not really matter. That every body is different so everyone should just move how it feels good.
That philosophy sounds inclusive. In practice, for students with pain, injuries, and aging bodies, it can cause real harm.
The Gap in Teacher Training
Most yoga teachers complete a 200-hour training program before they begin teaching. 200 hours is the minimum standard set by Yoga Alliance, and it covers a broad range of topics including philosophy, teaching methodology, and basic anatomy. What it does not provide is sufficient time to develop deep functional anatomy knowledge, biomechanical understanding, or the clinical reasoning required to teach safely across a diverse student population.
A research paper published in Lower Extremity Review noted that standardization of biomechanical alignment in yoga postures based on current science in joint and organ structure and function is still largely absent from yoga education. [1] The gap between what the science tells us about how bodies move and what yoga teachers are equipped to teach is significant.
This is not a criticism of teachers. It is a structural problem. When training programs do not emphasize biomechanics, teachers teach what they were taught. The cycle continues. And students with knee pain, hip pain, shoulder issues, and wrist problems continue to practice in ways that make their conditions worse because nobody has given their teacher the tools to help them.
I know this as a student. Unclear, people pleasing cuing gave me a body that hurt. I didn't know I was contributing to it. I am almost sure neither did my teachers.
What Alignment Actually Means
Alignment is not about forcing every body into the same shape. That is a misunderstanding that has fueled the backlash against teaching it.
Alignment is about understanding how forces move through the body during a given movement, and using that understanding to help each individual find a position that loads their joints and tissues appropriately for their structure. It is not aesthetic. It is biomechanical.
Research published in PubMed found that a biomechanically-based yoga program produced clinically meaningful improvements in pain, physical function, and mobility in women with knee osteoarthritis compared to traditional yoga and no exercise. [2] The difference was not in which poses were practiced. It was in how those poses were taught and executed.
That distinction matters enormously for the population I teach. Women over 50 with hip pain, wrist issues, post-surgical histories, and joint conditions are not served by the idea that alignment is optional. They need a teacher who understands how the body works well enough to help them find a version of each pose that builds them up rather than breaks them down.
The Demonstration Problem
There is a related issue that does not get discussed enough in yoga education circles. More and more teachers conduct their entire class from their own mat, demonstrating every pose from start to finish with limited observation of their students.
This approach makes sense for teachers who are not confident in their anatomy and alignment knowledge. Demonstrating is the next best thing to knowing how to assess and cue. But it comes at a cost.
When a teacher spends the entire class on their own mat, they cannot see what their students are doing. They cannot identify the student whose knee is caving inward in Warrior II, or the woman whose shoulder is hiking toward her ear in a side plank, or the student who is pulling on her hamstrings in a forward fold when those hamstrings are already injured. Research on preventive biomechanics confirms that identifying and correcting movement patterns before they cause injury is one of the most effective tools available for reducing musculoskeletal harm. [3] You cannot do that from your own mat.
What Students Need From Their Teachers
This is not about policing how people move. It is about giving students the information they need to make intelligent choices about their practice.
A student who understands why her knee should track over her second toe in Warrior II will make better decisions than one who has simply been told to feel the pose. A student who knows that pulling on an already-injured hamstring tendon is aggravating rather than healing will stop doing it. Understanding changes behavior in ways that correction alone cannot.
The most effective yoga teachers I know are not the ones who can demonstrate the most impressive poses. They are the ones who can explain why a pose is built a certain way, how to modify it for a specific condition, and what the body is actually doing during each movement. That knowledge comes from continued study of anatomy, biomechanics, and functional movement, not from a 200-hour certification alone.
A Note for Students
If you have been practicing yoga and your pain is not improving, or it is getting worse, your alignment may be part of the story. This is not your fault. You practice what you are taught.
Seek out teachers who can explain not just what to do but why. Ask questions about modifications. Notice whether your teacher watches you practice or spends the class on their own mat. These are not small things. They are the difference between a practice that heals and one that harms.
Your body deserves a teacher who knows it well enough to help.
